Sebelius: contraception will cut medical costs

Sebelius: contraception will cut medical costsRSSFacebookMarch 02, 2012

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has told a committee of the US House of Representatives that a mandate to cover contraceptive costs will not add to insurance premiums.
“The reduction in the number of pregnancies compensates for the cost of contraception,” Sebelius said. She claimed that the net result would be a decreased in insurance costs.
Rep. Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania said that he was stunned by the logic of the Sebelius argument. “Not having babies born is a critical benefit. This is absolutely amazing to me,” he said.
The testimony by Sebelius directly contradicts statements from insurance executives, who said that the contraceptive requirement would increase their costs.
