Gun-Rights Advocates Target Two Objectives This Week

From Personal Liberty Digest:

Gun-Rights Advocates Target Two Objectives This Week

March 9, 2011 by Personal Liberty News Desk

The annual gun-rights protest at the Illinois State Capitol Building will have two primary objectives this year.

On March 10, rally participants will advocate for legislation that legalizes the carry of defensive firearms. Currently, Illinois is one of two States, along with Wisconsin, that prohibits residents from carrying concealed weapons for defensive purposes. In addition, protesters will also condemn Attorney General Lisa Madigan's decision to make public the names and other personal information belonging to law-abiding gun owners in Illinois.

According to the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA), the private information of approximately 1.5 million firearm owners will be released to newspapers, gun control groups and any resident who requests their information.

"It's bad enough that private citizens are not allowed to defend themselves when they walk our dangerous streets," said ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. "But now Attorney General Madigan willfully sets citizens up as targets for crime by releasing their personal information to anyone who asks for it."

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) recently claimed that The Associated Press is behind the effort to publicize private information. CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb said that the media outlet is attempting to expose law-abiding citizens to "public scorn and ridicule." He sarcastically suggested that perhaps the names of former mental patients, recovering alcoholics and child rape victims should be released in order to sacrifice the private rights of more American citizens.
